BAYSVILLE
SPECIAL SCHOOL
Sport
Sport at Baysville is highly overlooked by the surrounding schools and is an issue that we are trying to solve through increased efforts to get the children to participate in any way possible. Due to transport problems most of the children have to go home via the bus and cannot take part in extra-mural activities. To solve this problem we allow the learners to practice on a Monday and Thursday from 12.05pm until the end of the day at 13.30pm. In this time we try our best to address all the areas that the learners need work on.
Over the past 3 years we have had some stand out sportsman and recently some sportswoman. Devaughan Pauls represented the S.A LSEN Craven Week side in 2014 and made a name for himself thanks to his dazzling skills and confidence. Khakalethu Bophi was our star sportsman for 2015 as he achieved 4 Gold Medals at the S.A National Championships for Athletics as well as making the Border u/18 Seven-a-Side Team. So far in 2016 we have been blessed to have Tracey-Lee Swartbooi and Sisipho Lengisi join our school. Tracey achieved 6 Medals at The National Championships for Athletics, 4 of which were gold and Sisipho achieved 5 Medals at the same Championships, 2 of which were gold.
A lot of these achievements are due to the hard work and extra time that these learners put in to their sport and they can be proud of their efforts as the rewards speak for themselves. The School is also privileged to have the staff that is necessary for the growth of these athletes. Our Soccer team is one of the best in the Eastern Cape and the skill shown by the players could be regarded as “nearly Professional”. The team is coached by Mr. Williams and Mr. Simmons and this combo has been working well together over the years and has taught the players that there is more to the game than just winning. The players are always ready for practice and eager to eat up any new information that their coaches have to offer them. At this time there are two of our past pupils entering into the professional scene as Markum Meyers, who finished in 2014, is currently waiting to hear about his selection for The Kaiser Chiefs and Kylo Botha, who finished in 2015, is entering the scene of Semi-Professional Football.
Baysville rugby is in the process of a big transformation and we are trying to improve the way that the School is perceived. Over the years we have been regarded as the rough guys who are coming to fight but over the years that has been nothing but a myth. The rugby coaches are: Mr. Horrmann, Mr. Blom, and Mr. Hempel and the support staff consists of Mr. Horn, Mr. Jordaan and Mr. Anderson. Through the efforts of these coaches we have improved our teams’ performances through the betterment of the player’s knowledge of the game and the finer details that allow the players to go out and have fun. We are currently a 3rd League team and our goal for the next 5 years is to raise the standard of rugby to a point where the opposition knows they are in for a good game.
