When the learners start their first year in the woodwork workshop they are first taught the basic workshop safety rules before training can commence.

We start by teaching the learners to identify and the correct use of the woodwork handtools.  Once this is accomplished they move over to the machine room.  The correct use and handling of handheld as well as larger fixed machines is taught.  We place a big emphasize on safety.

A theory lesson is first given on the specific machine, followed by a practical demonstration.  Thereafter the learner will start using the machine under strict supervision.

Practical work is planned in such a way that machines are mostly used to complete the projects.  The reason for this is that the learner gets the necessary experience in handling the various machines.

Basic carpentry, joinery, shopfitting and cabinetmaking are taught in the workshop.  This gives the learner a wider field when he applies for employment.  We must emphasize that we do not send out a qualified person, after the learner finished his schooling, but rather a person with a good background of the various woodworking processes.  It will be the employer’s duty to groom the learner into the specific needs of the company.  Our learners are very sought after in various fields of industry in East London and surrounds.
